What
do you think of Wren's Nest?
You
may have heard that we have a project running at Wrens Nest known
as Ripples Through Time. We are trying to innovate the interpretation
available at the site and online resources. This will feature sculpture,
panels and downloadable material for mobile phones etc. As part
of this we are trying to capture peoples thoughts and memories about
the site that so many of us have come to know.
Anything
at all is welcome, comment or poem, script or picture from the past.
To help guide this perhaps you could you tell me in no more than
a sentence...
-
What was your first encounter with the Wrens Nest?
- What
is the most amazing thing you know about the Wrens Nest?
- If
there was one thing that you would like to know more about for
the Wrens Nest what would it be?
- If
you could wish anything for the future of the Wrens Nest, what
would it be?
- If
you don't like the questions and would rather tell me something
else about the Wrens Nest then feel free. We really want to capture
what this place means to people.
Please
help and or pass on to anyone that you feel might have anything
to say about the Wrens Nest through time!
Please
contact us by no later than 24th July 2011.
Thanks,
Graham Worton

November 2008 - The 12th Annual Robert Grant
Lecture: Mary Anning: “The greatest fossilist the world ever
knew” by Prof. Hugh Torrens
JZ Young Lecture Theatre, UCL Anatomy Building
Wednesday 12 Nov 2008 at 4:30pm
Despite the fact that she was an uneducated, working-class woman
from Devon, Mary Anning (1799-1847) broke through the male-dominated
field of geology to become one of the most important fossil collectors
ever.
She
discovered the first ever plesiosaurs, the first British pterosaurs
and several amazing ichthyosaurs but she was rarely given the credit.
A religious Nonconformist, who published nothing and travelled little,
her life is difficult for historians to study but proves to be fascinating.
This lecture explores all of these problems, and outlines Anning’s
extraordinary achievements. Her work as a "merely commercial"
collector of fossils opens up the complex debate about who is
amateur and who professional.
Professor Hugh Torrens, former President of the British Society
for the History of Science and the International Commission on the
History of Geological Sciences is the leading expert on Anning’s
life, and has published over 200 books, articles and papers.
This lecture is run in partnership with the CEE.
Following the lecture, join us for a free glass of wine in a private
view of the Museum. This event is free and there is no need to book.
All are welcome.
